Ishmael now

He went to collage at Oberlin. He pursued advocacy work against the abuse of children in wartime. He spoke at the UN and met with leaders including Bill Clinton and Nelson Mandela. He works at the Human Rights Watch C29hildren’s Division Advisory Committee and he now lives in Brooklyn. He has been the keynote speaker for several events like the Global Young Leaders Conference 2007 (July 15-26 session), Oberlin College's 175th convocation ceremony, and the 2008 College Conference in Montreat, North Carolina. He recently went back home to Sierra Leone with an ABC News camera. To the point that we emulated the leaders, he said. When the lieutenant or corporal caught a prisoner and slit their throat or something like that, all the young people talked about it and say we want to do that, we want to be like that.

A Single Slice Poem

The poem "A Single Slice Reveals Them" by Naomi Shihab Nye
An apple on the table
hides its seeds
so neatly
under seamless skin.

But we talk and talk and talk
to let somebody
in.

This poem talks about Ishmael because he keeps things in like seeds in a apple he looks like he liked the war when he hates it and wont's it over and also he has a hard time showing his feelings toward people he only shows the hate toward people.

Double Conscisness

Soldier- as a soldier he has never really trusts other people, he don't feel pain as much, and had anger issue's.
Boy- as a boy he has flash backs, he still don't trust the doctors or anyone that isn't in his group, he has mental problem's too, and he thinks lower of everyone.

Acrostic poem

Greedy theey take every thing that the can for themselves.
Rebels the enemies in the book.
Envy towards the rebels.
Evil rebels trying to kill the army soldiers.
Neglected they give the civilians bad attitudes.

Slaying the rebels.
Negative actions they make the wrong decisions.
Active they run, crawl, jump, and kill.
Killing the rebels.
Enemy is the rebels that they are fighting.

God Grew Tired of Us

This movie was different then what I usually watch. It was about these boy's or men that came to America to get away from starving, poor, and out of the war or away from the war in Sudan. The people in it needed help getting in to jobs, college, and homes. The guys were very confused at first but by the end they had a job some had two and one went to college and there was one that snapped and got sent to a mental hospital. One of the men Panther was very concerned about the younger boys that came over because he didn't want them to act like the people on MTV.

The difference between Africa and the US are that we have Christmas and different holidays like that and theirs are different too. The other thing is that most people in the US have cars and houses. Most people from Africa live in tents and don't have cars.

Text to self

In the book A Long Way Gone By Ishmael Beah:

"The rebels roamed about; some sat against walls, dozing off, and others, boys as young as we, stood at guard posts passing around marijuana."

The quote above talks about people not paying attention and relaxing like there isn't a war going on around them. The only people paying are boy's that are passing around marijuana. This is like my life because I roam around the woods but I dont stand guard around my house or smoke marijuana.
